October 19, 2026 - Midland Public Schools (MPS) is proud to announce that Midland High Assistant Principal Matt Wenzell has been selected as a finalist for the 2027 Michigan Association of Secondary School Principals (MASSP) High School Assistant Principal of the Year for the second year in a row.

In his 25 years as an educator, including 16 years as an administrator, Matt Wenzell has developed a reputation as a compassionate and forward-thinking leader. Since joining MPS and Midland High as an assistant principal in 2017, Wenzell has championed social-emotional learning, restorative practices, and mental health awareness and has implemented policies and programs that enhance student support and foster a positive school culture. Through initiatives such as developing a comprehensive school resource center, refining intervention processes, and establishing effective cell phone policies, he has demonstrated a proactive and responsive approach to creating a positive school climate that emphasizes empathy, relationships, and community-building. Wenzell holds a master’s degree in educational leadership/principalship from Saginaw Valley State University.

“Matt’s recognition is a testament to the positive impact he makes every day,” said Superintendent Penny Miller-Nelson. “Through his leadership at Midland High School and across Midland Public Schools, he continues to move our district forward, building a school environment where Chemics feel supported, connected, and empowered to reach their full potential. His commitment to student success extends beyond the classroom, advancing both academic growth and student wellbeing while reflecting our commitment to inspiring excellence every day.”

MASSP, in partnership with the Michigan Association of Student Councils & Honor Societies, recognizes outstanding administrators at the high school and middle school levels each year. State-level winners are then advanced for consideration in the National Association of Secondary School Principals’ national awards program. The winner of the Assistant Principal of the Year award will be announced by the MASSP later this year.
